Chapter 6: What a Tank!

Chapter Introduction

“What a Tank!” is an interesting lesson about water conservation and the importance of water tanks. It tells us how people in different parts of India have used traditional water storage systems for many years. The chapter also explains the unique and creative overhead water tanks found in Punjab. Through the story of Suma, we learn why saving water is very important in our daily lives.

Detailed Notes (Explanation)

This lesson teaches us about saving water.

Long ago, people built big water storage structures to store rainwater. These helped them during dry months. Even today, some places in India use traditional methods to store water.

In Tamil Nadu, Ooranis store rainwater. In Kerala, Panam Keni wells do not dry up even in summer. In Rajasthan, Tankas are underground tanks that store water for many months.

Today, most houses have water tanks. These are usually built on rooftops and are called overhead water tanks. They store water for daily use like drinking, cooking, and cleaning.

Punjab is famous for its unique water tanks. Many tanks are shaped like flowers, footballs, tractors, roosters, aeroplanes and more. The shape of the tank often shows the interest or profession of the house owner. For example:

  • A farmer may have a tractor-shaped tank.

  • A football lover may have a football-shaped tank.

These tanks are made using steel rods and cement. Concrete is used to give them shape. They are strong and can store hundreds of litres of water.

The chapter also includes a story called “A Day without Water.” In the story, Suma wakes up one day and finds there is no water in her house. She understands how difficult life is without water. Later, she promises never to waste water and even suggests installing a rainwater harvesting system.

Message of the Chapter:

  • Water is precious and must not be wasted.

  • Water tanks help us store water safely.

  • We should develop water-saving habits.

  • Creativity can be seen even in everyday objects like water tanks.
