  • India celebrates Independence Day every year on 15 August. On 15 August 1947, India became independent from British rule after a long struggle led by many brave freedom fighters and ordinary citizens.

    Leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Bhagat Singh and many others played important roles in the freedom movement. People participated in movements such as the Non-Cooperation Movement, Civil Disobedience Movement, and Quit India Movement.

    On the eve of independence, Jawaharlal Nehru delivered his famous “Tryst with Destiny” speech. Since then, the Prime Minister of India has traditionally hoisted the national flag at the Red Fort in Delhi on Independence Day and addresses the nation.
