🐦 Let’s Begin: Birbal Counts Crows

King Akbar asked Birbal to count the crows in the city. Birbal said, “963!” “What if there are fewer?” asked Akbar. “Some have gone on holiday!” said Birbal. Clever Birbal! 😄

963 = 9 hundreds + 6 tens + 3 ones.

🔢 Part 1: Place Value

NumberHTONumber sentence
832832800 + 30 + 2
504504500 + 4
700700700

368 can be written in many ways: 300 + 60 + 8 · 68 more than 300 · 32 less than 400.

📏 Part 2: Neighbours on the Number Line

NumberBetween hundredsBetween fiftiesBetween tens
468400 and 500450 and 500460 and 470
723700 and 800700 and 750720 and 730

After 999 comes 1,000 (one thousand).

🔍 Part 3: Number Patterns

  • Counting digits: 123, 345, 789 (and backwards: 876, 321)
  • Triplet digits: 111, 222, 333…
  • Palindromes (read the same both ways): 353, 868, 121
⚠️ Common mistake Writing seven hundred six as 76 or 7006. ✅ It is 706: 7 hundreds, 0 tens, 6 ones.

Hundreds, fifties, tens

✅ Answer183: 100 & 200 · 150 & 200 · 180 & 190
345: 300 & 400 · 300 & 350 · 340 & 350
693: 600 & 700 · 650 & 700 · 690 & 700
734: 700 & 800 · 700 & 750 · 730 & 740
899: 800 & 900 · 850 & 900 · 890 & 900
Crane 1 (at 667): 667 + 33 = 700 · 667 − 17 = 650. Crane 2: find where it stands, then count the steps to 800 and back to 750. You can do it in 2 or 3 jumps.

Clues and number sentences

✅ AnswerClue matches in the example grid: 597 · numbers with a 4: 574, 614 · between 595 and 605: 597, 599, 600, 602 · tens digit 1: 614, 616 · 612 and 620 are not in this grid.
905 = 900 + 5 = 5 more than 900 · 555 = 500 + 50 + 5 · 736 = 700 + 30 + 6 = 64 less than 800

Number patterns

✅ AnswerFollow each rule shown on the arrows: +10 (850, 860…), +100 (450, 550, 650…), +25, +30, +15, and count by 1 on the path to 1,000.
775 = 750 + 25 = 700 + 75 · 400 = 290 + 110 = 300 + 100 · Fill the circles so the stated conditions (less/more) are true, using 23, 176, 384, and 905.

Patterns and word numerals

✅ AnswerMore counting patterns: 234, 456, 567, 654. More triplets: 444, 555… More palindromes: 121, 474, 909. With zeros: 100, 305, 990.
Slips: 231 = 2 slips of 100, 3 of 10, 1 of 1 · 123 = 1 of 100, 2 of 10, 3 of 1. Largest: 600. Smallest: 6 (six 1s). Numbers whose digits add up to more than 6 (like 99 or 7) can’t be made.
Digits 3 and 8: 33, 38, 83, 88 · 333, 338, 383, 388, 833, 838, 883, 888. Smallest 33, largest 888.

👨‍👩‍👧 Tips for Parents

  • Make numbers with ₹100, ₹10, and ₹1 play money.
  • Ask: “Is 648 closer to 600 or 700?”
  • Invent word numerals together (e.g. hands = 2, legs of a cow = 4).
