Chapter 6: Living in Harmony
Chapter at a Glance
We share our homes and surroundings with many animals, birds, insects and plants. Some we keep and care for, like cows, dogs, cats, parrots and potted plants. Others come uninvited, like ants, lizards, mosquitoes, cockroaches and rats. Even if we do not like some of them, we should not hurt them, because animals usually harm others only when they feel threatened.
In the story of the mango tree, Shambhu and his father rest under a big mango tree that is home to birds, squirrels and monkeys. A monkey eats a mango and throws away the seed, and his father explains that a new plant can grow from it. This is how animals help plants. Plants give us fruits, vegetables, medicines, fibre for clothes, wood, shade and fresh air, and give animals food and shelter. Animals help plants by spreading seeds and making the soil fertile with their waste. Squirrels even plant thousands of trees by accident when they bury nuts and forget them.
Children observe an animal closely and try an ant experiment with sweet, fried and cooked food to see which the ants like best. They learn to make friends with a tree and share their feelings with it. The chapter ends with a true story from Valparai, Tamil Nadu, where school children welcome Grey Wagtails, winter visitor birds, with posters and sweets. Living in harmony means caring for all living beings.
