Hide and Seek
Seeing things from different sides: top, front, and side views, positions in rows and columns, grid games, and simple maps.
- Why the same object looks different from different places
- Top view, front view, and side view
- Describing a position using rows and columns
- Moving on a grid: steps left, right, up, and down
- Reading and drawing a simple map (sight map)
🌳 Let’s Begin: The View from the Roof
Guddu climbed onto the roof of his house. Looking down, the mango tree looked like a big green circle, and the car looked like a rectangle! From the ground, the tree looked tall, with a trunk and branches.
Same things, but they look different from different places. What we see from a place is called a view.
👀 Part 1: Top, Front, and Side Views
| Object | Top view (from above) | Front view | Side view |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glass (cylinder) | Circle | Rectangle | Rectangle |
| Ice-cream cone | Circle | Triangle | Triangle |
| Brick | Rectangle | Long rectangle | Small rectangle |
| Dice (cube) | Square | Square | Square |
| Tent (triangular prism) | Rectangle | Triangle | Rectangle |
✅ Draw only what you can actually see from that side.
🪑 Part 2: Rows and Columns
In a classroom, desks are arranged in rows (going across) and columns (going front to back).
Picture a cinema hall. Your ticket says Row C, Seat 5. First find row C, then count 5 seats along. That’s how everyone finds their exact seat!
Grid positions
In a grid, we count rows from the bottom and columns from the left (unless told otherwise).
| Row 3 | ✏️ | 🧽 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Row 2 | 🍎 | ||
| Row 1 | ⚽ | ||
| Col 1 | Col 2 | Col 3 |
The ball is in row 1, column 1 (bottom left). The apple is in the middle.
🧭 Part 3: Moving on a Grid
Give directions using steps: “3 steps right, 2 steps up”. You can’t move diagonally!
From START, to reach the square 2 columns right and 3 rows up, you need 2 + 3 = 5 steps, whichever way you go (if you never go back).
🗺️ Part 4: Maps
A map is a drawing of a place seen from the top (like a bird or a drone sees it). A sight map shows paths from one place to another, like from the school gate to your classroom.
- Use words like: go straight, turn left, turn right, next to, opposite, behind.
- The shortest route is the one with the fewest steps or the least distance.

Brick drawings are different because each child looks from a different side. Match each drawing: the drawing showing the biggest face from above is the top view, the long side is the front view, and the short end is the side view.

Which object?
Boxy Buildings: build with matchboxes, then draw what you see from the front, the back, and the top.

What did Jagat think of?
Page 31: Every shortest path to the flower takes 7 steps (4 right and 3 up, in any order). The orange takes 4 steps and the mango takes 5, so the orange is reached in fewer steps.

👨👩👧 Tips for Parents
- Let your child draw a bottle or cup from the top, front, and side.
- Play a “grid hunt” using floor tiles and hide a toy.
