NCERT Class 1 Maths (Joyful Mathematics) · Chapter 9

Utsav

Patterns in festivals, decorations, colours, shapes, and numbers, and how to find what repeats and what comes next.

📌 What you’ll learn in this chapter
  • Finding patterns in festival decorations
  • Continuing colour and shape patterns
  • Growing patterns
  • Number patterns (jumps of 2, 3, 5, 10, and 11)

🪁 Let’s Begin: Kite Festival

On Makar Sankranti, Meera hangs a string of kites: 🔴🟡🔴🟡🔴… “What comes next?” asks her brother. “Yellow!” she shouts. Red, yellow, red, yellow is a pattern because it repeats.

🔁 Part 1: Repeating Patterns

  • Find the part that repeats: 🌸🍃🌸🍃 → “flower, leaf” repeats.
  • Say it aloud to hear the beat: “clap, snap, clap, snap…”

📈 Part 2: Growing Patterns and Number Patterns

▲ · ▲▲ · ▲▲▲ · ▲▲▲▲: one more each time.

2, 4, 6, 8… (jump of 2) · 10, 20, 30… (jump of 10)

💡 Number pattern trick Find how much the number jumps each time (bigger or smaller), then keep jumping the same amount.
⚠️ Common mistake Copying only the last item. ❌ In 🔵🔵🔴🔵🔵🔴, the next one is 🔵, not 🔴. Look at the whole repeating part.
