NCERT Class 2 Maths (Joyful Mathematics) · Chapter 3

Fun with Numbers

Numbers up to 100 on a ginladi and number line, skip counting, counting backwards, and patterns in the number chart.

📌 What you’ll learn in this chapter
  • Moving forward and backward on a number line
  • Skip counting in 2s, 3s, 5s, and 10s
  • Counting backwards
  • Patterns in the 1–100 number chart

🐸 Let’s Begin: Jumpy the Frog

Jumpy the frog sits on 0. He jumps 2 steps each time: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10… That’s skip counting in 2s!

His big brother jumps 5 steps: 5, 10, 15, 20… They both land on 10 and 20!

➡️ Part 1: Forward and Backward

  • Moving forward makes the number bigger: 23 → 3 steps forward → 26
  • Moving backward makes it smaller: 23 → 3 steps back → 20

🦘 Part 2: Skip Counting

Jump ofNumbers
22, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12…
55, 10, 15, 20, 25…
1010, 20, 30, 40…
3 (from 1)1, 4, 7, 10, 13…

🔢 Part 3: The Number Chart

  • Going right adds 1, and going left takes away 1.
  • Going down adds 10, and going up takes away 10.
💡 Number window Around 28: above = 18, below = 38, left = 27, right = 29.
⚠️ Common mistake Thinking the number after 39 is 310. ❌ After 39 comes 40.

Beads and steps

✅ AnswerA ginladi usually has 100 beads (colour changes every 10). Blank cards: count the beads from 22 onwards to find each number. For the number strip, count the steps between each animal and the flower in your book.
Squirrel: −2 + 5 − 3 = back where it started (no change). Frog: +2 − 7 − 3 = 8 steps back from where it started.
