NCERT Class 2 Maths (Joyful Mathematics) · Chapter 10
Fun at the Fair
Money: notes and coins, paise and rupees, spending and money left, paying the same amount in different ways, and shopping sums.
📌 What you’ll learn in this chapter
- Indian notes and coins
- 100 paise = 1 rupee
- Finding the money spent and the money left
- Making one amount with different notes and coins
- Adding and subtracting money in word problems
🎡 Let’s Begin: Sonu’s Mela Money
Sonu gets ₹40 from Nani for the mela. He buys a whistle for ₹10 and a balloon for ₹15.
Spent: 10 + 15 = ₹25. Left: 40 − 25 = ₹15. Enough for a candy floss! 🍭
💰 Part 1: Notes and Coins
- Coins: ₹1, ₹2, ₹5, ₹10, ₹20
- Notes: ₹10, ₹20, ₹50, ₹100, ₹200, ₹500
- 100 paise = ₹1. So 2 × 50 paise = ₹1 and 4 × 25 paise = ₹1.
➖ Part 2: Money Spent and Money Left
Money given − Money spent = Money left
💡 Count up to find what was spent
Had ₹50 and ₹12 is left? Count up from 12: 12 → 20 (8), 20 → 50 (30). Spent = 8 + 30 = ₹38. Shopkeepers often count this way!
🪙 Part 3: Many Ways to Pay
₹35 can be paid as: ₹20 + ₹10 + ₹5, or ₹10 + ₹10 + ₹10 + ₹5, or ₹20 + ₹5 + ₹5 + ₹5.
⚠️ Common mistake
Counting coins instead of their value. ❌ 3 coins are not ₹3 if they are ₹10 coins! 3 × ₹10 coins = ₹30.
